I have a confession. I have been living with something in my house for the ENTIRE six years we’ve inhabited our home. One of those… things. Those things that makes you cringe every time you look at it. Makes me question at least once a month “why haven’t I DONE anything about that yet??”
Our patio door with bare, exposed screw holes and worn-out black weather stripping… urgh…
I know, I know, positively horrifying right?
Well. I am finally going to rectify this situation! But before I get to that. Do you know how hard it is to get your hands on those little plug things without the purchase of a new door?? Who knew! I thought I’d just be able to walk right into Home Depot, make a $3 purchase and pop those suckers into place. Problem Solved. NOPE!
Ours happened to be missing because they were never installed in the first place. So, what’s a girl to do, right? Well… Sugru, of course! …say what now?
You heard me! Sugru! … A self-setting rubber that can be formed by hand. It moulds like play-dough, bonds to almost anything and turns into a strong, flexible silicone rubber overnight. Exciting stuff!
I’ve been wanting an excuse to use this stuff for a long time. So, here’s my chance!
I was filled with nerdy excitement to find this stuff in my mailbox — think Star Wars buff and his first experience at Comic Con. I immediately peeled this stuff out of its adorable packaging and…
Pretty simple stuff. I began by seperating it into little balls, and rolling them with my fingers…
Applied some sugru to the screwhole…
Flattened it out using my finger tip…
Go over it a couple times until it’s smooth…
And, voilá, patched and good as new. Just give it some time to dry and set.
Just look how much better this is! Here’s a shot with a few completed screwholes, next to a few waiting their turn…
And, while I’m at it, let’s throw a little paint up on that ugly black weather stripping…
And to recap — this, is Booooo!
And, this is Yaaaaaaay!
I know, I know, exciting stuff right? Well, if you’ve ever had one of those never-gonna-get-around-to-it jobs, then you KNOW what this feels like to scratch it off your dreaded LIST. Happy home repairing!
