Backyard – Before and After

In the summer of 2008, after a long winter, we decided it was time to tackle the backyard. Our goal was to create a outdoor room to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Step One: dig up perfectly good sod. Boo.

Leveling is the name of the game. Level the black dirt, cover with gravel. Level the gravel, cover with sand. Level the sand. Level the sand. Level the sand! Now we can begin with the stone. This is a good DIY outline of the process. One stone down, how many to go?

We had some help from my folks for this one. We chose a man-made garden stone available at Home Depot. Affordable and easy to work with. Well, easy as it could be on the hottest weekend of the summer! Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, you’re going to be outside a loooong time!

We found our furniture at Beachcomber Hot Tubs and Patio. Fantastic place with vast selection and great service. This stuff is gonna get a lot of use in it’s lifetime! Everybody now… Ahhhh. Little suburban oasis.

BACKYARD – BEFORE AND AFTER PART 2

We found some coordinating stone and decided to build up a garden wall. Hey, hey, don’t judge the greenthumb — the garden needs some time to fill in, but I think it will do us very well for years to come.

What did you use against the fence? I have wanted to something like that but was scared of rot.

Hi Jillian — the flower bed has treated garden ties, horizontally against the fence. We drilled holes in them and inserted rebar to hold everything in place. Hope that helps! good luck!

i LOVE the wall surrounding your flower bed. would you mind sharing where you got the stone from? i’m planning a similar project in my backyard.
    thanks!

Hi Sabine, the flower bed wall stone is a man-made stone. It comes in chunks that fit together kind of like tile. And, we purchased it at Home Depot approx. 2 summers ago.
