It is that time of year again — The Fall edition of the “One Room Challenge” has kicked off! I’ve got six weeks to transform my space! If you missed my Spring-time, One Room Challenge, you can check it out here! Now it’s time for week one of my DIY Guest Restroom transformation!
Once upon a time (about 3 years ago) we had this dingy little bathroom. It was painted a salmon-beige, had straw-yellow cabinets, chipping paint, and outdated/broken fixtures. After moving in, we gave it a economical makeover — painted vanity, a much-needed new tub and surround, a new light and new faucet. And, we thought our restroom would stay just like that for years to come.
Then we renovated.
If you can believe it, that little restroom was the only room in the house we planned to leave alone — completely untouched. It didn’t work out that way.
For seven long months, during our renovation, that little hard-working bathroom saw dust and construction. It had messy tradespeople going in and out with their hard work boots. It was our paint clean-up station with the only working sink. It housed DIY projects, and paint cans, and generally got abused. (I should mention we were NOT living at home during this time).
The painted cabinet became chipped and stained. The walls were damaged with the installation of a new door. Construction dust ground its way into the cork floating floor. Things were not looking so fresh anymore, (don’t even get me started on the toilet).
Then along came the next session of ORC. The One Room Challenge. I knew I could slap some paint on it and call her done. But — we had an opportunity to really think it through and give ourselves a guest bathroom to last a good long while.
After our renovation, we went from having 1.5 bathrooms on the main floor, to 3 full bathrooms! One shower, to three! Now, instead of our main bath pulling triple duty as the only shower, the “kid friendly” bathroom, and the company restroom… we could dedicate it to our guests. YAY! Time to really pretty things up!
I’m starting off the ORC, with a bit of a clean slate. We’ve installed the new door already… isn’t she gorgeous?! And when the big renovation happened, our little restroom got new vinyl plank oak flooring. I still like my old Kate Spade Shower curtain, but that’s changing too!
We also have a new modern, easy clean, toilet to start us off on the right foot. As funny as it sounds the toilet was one of those silly things I was most excited for during our renovations. All three got switched out for this modern sleek version. The best part? The hidden plumbing traps. AKA: no ‘squiggle’ to clean around on the base of the toilet! Just a single, smooth wall to wipe clean. If you’re in the market for a new one — consider the modern ones with hidden plumbing!
So I’ve got myself a pretty clean slate to start off my ORC. I hope you’ll check in next week to check out my progress and exactly where this restroom is going!
