Keeping it Real – Weird Wires

It’s the first Monday of the month — time for another edition of “Keeping it Real”. I had to ask myself exactly why I’m choosing to share the ugly, but… that’s just it, isn’t it? We ALL have ugly, weird, and ignored areas of our homes. I’m here to make you feel a little better about whatever you’ve got going on. My home is not Pinterest-perfect, 24/7. Not even close. So, let me show you what I have for you this month…

Keeping it Real – Weird Wires. Yep, wires. I didn’t even realize my home was rating about a 7, on the weird wire scale, until I started wandering around, snapping pics.

First up… whatever this^ is… (This post may contain affiliate links. Nice hole in the wall, right? This is actually an improvement. Yeah. This guy, has a bit of a story… but, nice light, right?

This is right over my kitchen sink. The original light was… not a keeper. Is it just me, or does it look a little, outdoor, motion-lighty? Motion-lighty is a word.

So no big whoop, right? Let’s switch it out, and sometime in the future, re-wire things a little to have the light hang from the ceiling. But in the meantime, a simple swag will do…

But after taking the old light down, we found this! I’ve never seen anything like it. No light/junction box to speak of, and the wire was plastered right into the wall. It made no sense, seemed unsafe, and likely not up to current building code. So, we took it all down, cut into the wall and reworked everything to add a proper light box. But… we were left with this hole-in-the-wall behind the fixture and… (sigh)… we’ve never got around to making it any better. So… weird wire #1.

Next? This. This defies explanation. This is a satellite wire coming from the exterior of our home into our bedroom. But, it doesn’t get hidden neatly behind a baseboard, nope — it gets drilled through the floor (the floor!) a good six inches off the wall. Don’t ask, ‘cuz I don’t know.

I have used the art of “creative cropping” in past posts regarding my bedroom, to get around this little ditty. Weird wire #2.

Creative Cropping (verb) Using photo editing software to exclude the hot mess happening within a photo frame, and hide the weird stuff in your home, from your blog readers. (:

And, last but not least, this is what’s left of what used to be, our doorbell — just hanging out, over our smiling faces. The Kiddo and I had just come inside from a nice Summer lunch out on the deck… to a burning smell. Yep, I panicked. I discovered a humming coming from the doorbell casing, popped of the cover and sure enough. Our door bell was toast. Whatever little motorized piece that operates the chime, had given up the ghost.

Keeping it Real - Weird Wires. So, like the responsible adults we are, we turned off that breaker, removed the old doorbell chime, and purchased a replacement. Which, has yet to go up (I think we’re on week 3). So… weird wires #3.

See? Not so perfect, around the Fresh Crush home. Extra points for the eagle-eyes that caught the kitchen cabinet colour change! Did you catch it? I was waiting on a new counter top before posting about our kitchen refresh, but —  if it’s still here next month, I might have to do a “Keeping it Real” with my odd kitchen cabinet and counter colour combo.

See you next month!

Haha, oh man. I favorite, if I could even choose, would be the cable drilled 6″ off the wall and into the ground! #keepinitreal!

I don’t understand what goes through some people’s heads when it comes to house things! We had a few not-to-code and dangerous surprises when we changed out lights in our house too. Makes me so angry with people! That cord in the floor takes the cake, hands down.

Right, Emily?! Urgh, whhhhhyyyyy? Yeah. I don’t know HOW the cord-in-the-floor came to be, or who thought that was a good idea. Ha! Oh well, keeps things interesting. :)

Ha ha! Creative cropping! Hilarious! Don’t we all have those weird ugly wires around our house. Glad y’all were able to get to that doorbell before anything bad happened.

Ha! Thanks Jess, um… ya. I totally panicked with that one. Any burning smell is scary, but luckily this one turned out to be harmless. :)
