Valentine Art

I’m not so big on Valentine’s Day. I should say “we aren’t”, as I am part of a couple. We’ve just never done the chocolates and candy thing. However, I CAN get behind the sentiment of the day. It can’t hurt to pass along some ooey-gooey feelings, towards your loved ones, right? (I’m not that much of a Valentine scrooge!) But, it’s a little funny that I have a full-fledged, Valentine inspired project, to share today.

There is this big community event in our area, that happens every year, in the middle of winter. It’s great because it gets everyone outside for the whole weekend, with a ton of events, for kids of all ages — and of course, it falls on Valentine’s Day.

This year, there was a NEW event, called, “Chill! The outdoor art exhibit”, and I decided to get involved. Enter, my Valentine art project…

What the heck is that, you say?! Well, it’s art, it’s Valentine-y, and most of all… it’s got some hidden messages. But, let me back up, and show you where it all started. I was inspired by nature, and being an outdoor art event, I thought… trees — and, got collecting… and trimming… and drilling…

If you’ve seen these little trimmed tops on Instagram, you’re about to find out what that was all about…

I used a large spade bit to drill holes into some of the tree trunks, and used the trimmed off tops, as lids. The were easily attached with a simple hammer and nail.

The other tree trunks got a painted top treatment. These little beauties are holding some secrets!

Then I used a sheet of plywood as my base to create my little “Valentine Forrest”. Drilling up from the bottom, about 3 screws each. I covered the base with snow to hide the plywood… and bada-bing, it’s done!

The tippy-tops of my secret tree trunks got a little painted treatment, too. Solids for messages, and painted triangles for…

Candy! That’s what those deep drilled holes were for! Fun, right?!

As for the messages? Hopefully it’ll encourage a little love this weekend…

I love how interactive it turned out! The Kiddo and I were outside playing around with it, and it encouraged lots of kisses and hugs for Mom. I was feeling the love. So.. I guess it worked!! Hopefully it translates to others this weekend, I’m looking forward to it!

If my little beauty holds up all weekend, I’d like to bring it home and hide it along our “secret trail” through the trees on our property. I’m sure it’ll get rough, but it’ll be fun to revisit it on our walks, all year-round.

If you’re local, come on down to Alberta Beach and get outside and have some fun! Visit snomodays.com for more info!
