Oh man! This has been some week. And it wasn’t all ORC – Kid’s Bedroom Design, all-the-time. We moved out of the tiny cabin after four months, it’s our first week in the newly renovated house (though not complete), we sold the condo we bought together just before we were married (we had kept it as a rental – totally bitter sweet), and trying to assemble some kind of normalcy in the chaos that is our DIY renovation. Oh, and being parents, and work, and all that good everyday stuff. Say it with me… PHEW!
Luckily my child is a superstar, and has been taking all the big changes and dealing with half-finished rooms in stride. She even joins in on the DIY fun. (This post may contain affiliate links. This is the part where I tell you about my minor, but huge impact, snag to my ORC Project. Well, no, let’s just wait on that a minute and focus on my wins for the week. First, and best, we have carpet! Not just any carpet — but soft, creamy, new, comfy carpet. Yay for carpet! We have artwork… yay for artwork! We have a light… yay a for the light! We have a bed… yay for a bed!
See? Even the Kiddo is thrilled with the progress. But did you catch that little snafu? A bed. Singular. Yep… the wrong bed-rails arrived to put together my second thrift store bed. Those important, very affordable, but elusive little hunks of metal, that turn this piece of furniture from a simple head and foot-board, into an actual operational sleeping device.
And, unfortunately that threw everything off. Can’t plan the space until I have everything I need, can’t hang the artwork until I know exactly where the furniture is sitting, can’t hang my nifty bedside light until I know where the nightstand will be. So… we will have to wait for the delivery of the new, and hopefully correct, bed-rails and finish this puppy up next week! Talk about down to the wire!
Speaking of my nifty light. I found this gorgeous pendant shade in that incredible lilac colour at HomeSense. It was attached to a hardwired pendant fixture, and I wanted a plug-in, but at $16… I couldn’t leave it behind. Then I found a great cord kit online, and they even had purple!
Superstore provided some accessories. And, I’ve been sewing up a storm with pillows and curtains this week. Remember the Kiddo’s “morning/night pillows” from last week? Welp, they made it onto the bed!
Fun, right? And that bedding is everything I hoped it would be. So, another yay for that!
So what’s left?
- paint and install baseboards
- install second bed and nightstand
- hang pendant light
- hang artwork
- install closet doors (not sure if this will happen)
- finish sewing curtains
- accessorize
- enjoy a drink on the deck
Yep, that sounds about right. See you next week. Wish me luck!

Jen, what a bummer that the wrong pieces arrived. I can see where that snafu throws a wrench into everything else. How frustrating. The room is coming along beautifully though. I’m looking forward to the reveal this week. By the way, my boys have that same gray owl – we just love him!
I love the bed frame, its adorable. Plus that light fixture is too cute, can’t wait to see the reveal!
This is such a cool room, I can’t wait to see it all come together. Your girl looks thrilled already! That bedding is my FAV!
Umm, love that purple lamp cord (good find!) – haha I also like your last to-do list task, hopefully you get to enjoy that one :)
Really looking forward to seeing the finished room. I’m so glad to see this fresh take on a girls room, that isn’t overly pink and girly. My daughter is not into that stuff at all and it’s been hard to find inspiration for her room. Good luck!
So fun!! Sorry for the mishap :( Crossing my fingers it comes soon!!
Jen you did indeed have a full plate! I adore the sneak peeks and I can’t wait for the reveal! I love the direction the space is going in. As a fellow ORC participant it’s been wonderful to gather some fantastic inspiration. I’d love for you to share your progress at Thoughts of Home on Thursday. Our readers would love to see it. The gathering is at http://www.decortoadore.net
Ahhhhh, you’ve got this Mama! And that light … GORGEOUS! Can’t wait to see the big reveal next week!
Thanks girl! It’ll all come together, I just can’t wait to get it all done… especially for my little! :)
I can’t wait to see it next week! I absolutely love that adorable shade!
